Meri-K Appy is a national injury prevention expert with a proven track record in leading organizations and teams to execute innovative public safety initiatives. She is skilled in consensus building and in securing resources and commitment to achieve ambitious goals. As President of the Home Safety Council, she spearheaded the first national nonprofit focusing on home safety in America and built a network of more than 3,000 fire and life safety leaders to deliver lifesaving messages to their communities.

Meri-K is skilled at simplifying complex safety concepts. She created hands-on, affordable educational tools and training systems to enable fire and life safety advocates to deliver and evaluate prevention programs at local, state, and national levels. She partnered with leading adult literacy experts to develop new methods to reach the more than 90 million adults in America with low literacy skills. The program won the 2009 Literacy Leadership Award from National Coalition for Literacy for creating the first injury prevention and disaster preparedness curriculum for adults in the US with below-basic/basic reading skills.

Meri-K chaired Safe USA, brokering consensus among leading fire service and public health organizations to achieve common goals in national outreach efforts. Through her career she has secured more than $35 million in funding for fire and life safety programs and general operations through major corporate sponsorships and successful grant applications.

Meri-K serves on the Vision 20/20 Executive Committee, the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ Fire and Life Safety Section Board and the John’s Hopkins School of Public Health Center for Injury Research and Policy Advisory Board . She was awarded the 2006 Mason Lankford Award for Fire Service Leadership (Congressional Fire Services Institute and Motorola); 2006 Fire Sprinkler Advocate of the Year (American Fire Sprinkler Association); and the 2000 Person of the Year (Society of Fire Protection Engineers).
